From June 20, 2016 – June 24, 2016, The Juntos, “Together for a Better Education Program” hosted its 7th annual Summer Academy Camp at North Carolina State University. Dr. Duane Larick, Senior Vice Provost for Academic Strategy and Resource Management, welcomed over 100 rising 9th-12th grade high school students and college students that participated in this week-long college experience. Paul Cuadros, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Associate Professor, was the keynote speaker to these students. During the week, students were divided into groups of eight with two team captains and a staff member. Team captains were college students/recent grads that represented colleges from all over North Carolina, including the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, UNC Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Appalachian State University, and more. The 108 students represented the following counties: Wake, Wayne, Forsyth, Yadkin, Durham, Sampson, Mecklenburg, New Hanover, and Watauga County. Summer Academy gave Latino youth the opportunity to experience college life by attending classes and workshops, meeting with professionals and professors, connecting with college students and so much more. The students were able to attend the following classes: Entomology, STEM, Design/Textiles, and Nanoscale Technology. Additionally, students partook in workshops such as, “Theater of the Oppressed”, presented by youth in local non-profits, the El Pueblo, writing workshops, financing higher education and more. This year, students were involved in creating a sustainability themed art project. They brought recyclable materials from their home counties and worked on creating a metamorphism of butterflies. Butterflies were brought *together* and spelled Juntos. The project highlighted the importance of recycling and encouraged youth to find ways to make a difference and promote sustainability in their communities. It is currently on display at the Youth and Consumer Sciences building at NC State Brickhaven Building.
